MALIBU, Calif. – The Mexican U-20 National Team World Cup roster was announced today and Pepperdine’s Taylor Alvarado was named to the team. Alvarado will compete for Mexico at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Aug. 5-24 in Canada.
Alvarado has been playing with the U-20 team since the CONCACAF Championship in January where Mexico finished runner-up. She previously competed for Mexico at the 2012 U-17 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
The Waves’ sophomore forward was invited to join the Mexican National Team in early July for training camp as one of 24 players seeking to make the final roster. She is one of six forwards to make the 21-player roster named by Head Coach Christopher Cuellar.
Alvarado and the CONCACAF runner-up Mexican side will travel to Canada on Aug. 1. Mexico will face Nigeria (Aug. 6), England (Aug. 9) and Korea Republic (Aug. 13) in Group C play. Mexico finished training with a pair of friendlies against Canada, playing to a scoreless draw in the first and then grabbing a 3-0 win.
Alvarado is part of a growing legacy of Waves competing on the national team stage. Three former Waves competed on their respective national teams at the highest level; Roxanne Barker (South Africa), Anisa Guajardo (Mexico) and Anna Picarelli (Italy). Pepperdine Alum Megan Woods and current Wave standout Lynn Williams have also both participated in U.S. National Team training camps, and Wave star Michelle Pao received an invite to a U.S. training camp, but couldn't attend due to injury. Pao was drafted by Sky Blue FC of the National Women's Soccer League earlier this year. She was the second Pepperdine alum drafted since the league's inaugural draft in 2013 when Barker was selected by Portland Thorns FC.
