Pepperdine Women's Soccer Picked to Finish Fourth in WCC Preseason Coaches Poll

Aug. 2, 2006

Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team, which has made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, has been picked to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference (WCC) during the upcoming 2006 season in a vote of conference head coaches, it was announced on Tuesday.

Defending national champion Portland was picked as the favorite to win the conference as the Pilots totaled 47 overall points, including five first-place votes. Portland returns eight starters from last year's championship team, but will most definitely miss national "Player of the Year" Christine Sinclair and three-time All-American Lindsey Huie.

Santa Clara, which totaled 45 points and received three first-place votes, was picked to finish second. The Broncos, who reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season, return 10 starters and have the fourth best recruiting class in the nation, according to Soccer Buzz.

Gonzaga, which appeared in its first-ever NCAA tournament, was selected to finish third with 34 points, while Pepperdine followed with 31 points.

San Diego was selected to finish fifth (23) and was followed by Loyola Marymount (21), while Saint Mary's (15) and San Francisco (7) were picked to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.

Pepperdine, which concluded the 2005 season with a 15-4-3 record and a trip to its second-ever "Sweet 16", returns 21 letterwinners and seven starters. Its recruiting class was ranked 18th in the nation and fifth in the West region by Soccer Buzz. The Waves are led by seniors Lindsey Redlin, Jennifer Brewer, Courtney Nelson, Lauren Treinen, Caitlin Mitchell and Loretta Younkin.

Redlin had 12 goals and six assists for 30 points last season and looks to lead Pepperdine's offense this upcoming season. The defense continues to be stellar with Nelson, Treinen and Mitchell along with sophomore Ashley Copp protecting the net.

Pepperdine kicks off its 2006 season on Friday, August 25 when the Waves face Idaho in a 3 p.m. match at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif.
