PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots women's soccer team will begin the 2011 season ranked seventh, according to the NSCAA Preseason Poll which was released on Tuesday. The Pilots, who were tabbed to defend their West Coast Conference championship, ended last year at No. 8 in the NSCAA rankings.
Portland, which began the fall campaign with its first official practice last Friday, opens the 2011 season on Sunday, Aug. 21 against No. 5 Florida State at Merlo Field. Kick-off between the Pilots and the fifth-ranked Seminoles is set for 5 p.m.
Other ranked opponents on UP's 2011 schedule include No. 2 Stanford (Sept. 15), No. 15 Santa Clara (Oct. 21), No. 17 UC Irvine (Sept. 22), No. 19 Oregon State (Sept. 11), No. 20 Washington (Sept. 9) and No. 25 USC (Sept. 18). BYU and San Diego each received votes in the poll. The Pilots will have the luxury of playing six of these opponents at home, with only the games against UC Irvine and BYU scheduled for the road.
The Pilots return 15 letterwinners and eight starters from a team that was 19-1-2 a year ago. Back are Portland's top two scorers in senior forward Danielle Foxhoven and sophomore forward Micaela Capelle, who each registered eight goals and five assists in 2010. Goalkeepers Hailee DeYoung and Erin Dees also return after splitting time in goal last season. Dees, a sophomore, posted six shutouts and a goals against average of 0.45, while the senior DeYoung had four shutouts and a GAA of 0.67.
