Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team, coming off a "Sweet 16" appearance in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, garnered a No. 20 national ranking in Soccer Buzz' 2006 preseason poll that was released on Friday. The Waves also earned a No. 6 ranking in the West Region.
Pepperdine is coming off a 15-4-3 season in which it finished fourth in the West Coast Conference (WCC) and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament where it lost to perennial national power North Carolina.
Pepperdine is one of four WCC schools ranked in the Top 30, joining Santa Clara (No. 2), defending national champion Portland (No. 5) and Gonzaga (No. 25). UCLA earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking and is coming off a 22-2-2 season and national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships.
The Waves, who were picked fourth in the WCC coaches preseason poll, return 21 letterwinners, including seven starters. Pepperdine's recruiting class was ranked 18th in the nation and fifth in the West region by Soccer Buzz.
Redlin highlights the group of returning players after finishing second on the team with 30 points (12 goals, six assists) in 2005. The defense continues to be stellar with Nelson, Treinen and Mitchell along with sophomore Ashley Copp protecting the net.
Pepperdine kicks off its 2006 season on Friday, August 25 when the Waves face Idaho in a 3 p.m. match at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif.
