SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Santa Clara University has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 West Coast Conference women's soccer title. In a preseason poll of the WCC's 10 head coaches, the Broncos captured all nine possible first place votes, and 81 overall points in the poll. Competition will be tough for Santa Clara, as the West Coast Conference placed four teams in last year's NCAA Tournament.
The University of Portland, a 2012 NCAA Tournament participant, and 2012 West Coast Conference champion Brigham Young University were picked to finish second and third, respectively, in this year's poll. The Pilots earned 68 points and a first place vote, while the Cougars tallied 67 points in the poll. 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Pepperdine University garnered 57 points in the survey. The University of San Diego, a 2011 NCAA participant, earned 51 points to finish fifth. The Toreros were followed by Loyola Marymount University (38 points), the University of San Francisco (29 points) and Saint Mary's College (26 points), with Gonzaga University (22 points) and WCC newcomer University of the Pacific (10 points) rounding out the survey.
Five WCC schools are represented on the preseason All-West Coast Conference team, led by BYU's four selections. The 2013 season begins on Friday, August 23, with nine West Coast Conference teams in action. Leading up to Opening Day, the West Coast Conference will host a Google+ Hangout previewing the 2013 WCC women's soccer season. Fans will be able to ask questions of WCC student-athletes and watch the event live on YouTube.
