SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Former University of San Diego All-American Leigh Ann Robinson and the Philadelphia Independence advanced to its second consecutive WPS Championship by defeating magicJack 2-0 in front of a season-high 5,410 fans at PPL Park. Tasha Kai and Amy Rodriguez each netted goals in the Philadelphia shutout.
"I am so excited to be playing for this championship," stated Robinson. "This past five months has been crazy, trying to get here, and now we have 90 minutes to pour it out on the field, I know we are the underdog, but I kind of like that."
After a scoreless first half that saw plenty of opportunities on each side, Kai scored the game's first goal just thirty seconds into the second period. She intercepted a magicJack pass in the box, catching the defense off guard and curling in a shot past Loyden.
Independence goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart played a stellar match, stopping nine magicJack shots on goal.
Amy Rodriguez clinched the game for the Independence in the 81st minute when she took a pass from Danesha Adams and dropped in a shot past Loyden. The game-clincher was Rodriguez's third goal of the season.
Robinson and her Philadelphia teammates will now travel to Rochester, NY to face the Western NY Flash in the WPS Championship on August 27 at 4:00 p.m.
