MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine senior forward Sophia Medina (Downey, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week less than 24 hours after striking the game-winning overtime goal in Sunday's 2-1 triumph over Marquette.
Medina's goal in the 98th minute was the 10th of her career and sixth game winner. She has scored 28 points in her three-plus seasons at Pepperdine.
Medina is a two-time WCC Player of the Week. She last earned this citation as a freshman in October of 2006 after providing the game-winning assist in overtime vs. San Diego and scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over then-No. 3 Santa Clara. Medina was named to the All-WCC honorable mention and freshman teams later that season and was an all-conference second team honoree in 2007.
Medina is the first Wave to be selected WCC Player of the Week since goalkeeper Lacey Heck (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS) earned her certificate on Sept. 12 of last year following consecutive shutouts of Tennessee and Washington State.
Pepperdine travels to Knoxville this weekend for a rematch with the Lady Vols on Sunday, but will first battle Kansas Friday afternoon as part of the four-team First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.
