Gonzaga sits atop WCC standings

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- There's a new leader atop the West Coast Conference women's soccer standings, after Gonzaga picked up shutout wins at Austin Peay and Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs are off to a 5-1 start.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • A pair of West Coast Conference teams are ranked in this week's NSCAA Top 25 poll: Pepperdine (10) and Portland (19). WCC preseason favorite Santa Clara is also receiving votes.

  • No. 19 Portland hosts No. 7 Notre Dame on Friday night at Merlo Field. As part of Military Appreciation Night, the Oregon Army National Guard will have military vehicles on-site and provide a tribute to fallen soldiers during halftime.

  • A record 15 WCC women's soccer matches will be televised nationally this season, including Thursday night's showdown between Texas and BYU on FOX Soccer. The Cougars enter the match having posted three consecutive shutouts.

  • Portland's Amanda Frisbie and Pepperdine's Amanda LeCave are the WCC Co-Players of the Week. Both Frisbie and LeCave scored four goals in a single match in propelling their teams to victory last week.

  • The Pilots have won three straight games, all by shutout. UP has surrendered just one goal this season.

  • A tough test awaits San Diego this weekend, as the Toreros will face No. 4 Duke and No. 18 UNC in Durham, N.C.

  • West Coast Conference members have made 65 NCAA Tournament appearances, 19 Final Four appearances, and have won three national titles (Santa Clara in 2001, Portland in 2002, 2005).
