SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 24th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team had three players named to the All-WCC/ACC Challenge Tournament team from this past weekend's action. Senior midfielder Leigh Ann Robinson, senior defender Vanessa Vella and freshman forward Ashleigh Shoughro were the three USD players named All-Tournament.
Shoughro, a 5-4 freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., tallied the game-winning goal in USD's upset win over, then No. 19, Wake Forest University. At the 81:13 mark, Robinson dribbled around a Wake Forest defender and crossed the ball to Shoughro, who was on the left side of the goal box. Shoughro corralled the past and hit a one-timer past the WFU goalkeeper, Laura Morse, to lift USD to victory.
Robinson, a 5-9 senior from San Diego, Calif., set up Shoughro on the game-winning goal. This was the first assist of the season for Robinson, who tallied a career-high seven assists to go along with nine goals in 2006.
Vella, a 5-6 senior from Encinitas, Calif., helped anchor down the Toreros defense and played a big role in USD's scoreless draw with, then No. 22, Duke University. Vella has tallied five goals and eight assists in her four years in a Torero uniform.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Dayton, Ohio to take on the University of Dayton in a 4:30 p.m. match.
