SPOKANE, Wash. - Ashley Riley, a midfielder on the Gonzaga University women's soccer team, has been named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week as announced on Tuesday. Riley was one of 11 awarded the honor by the publication after the Bulldogs' posted a 2-0-0 record en route to winning the Vanderbilt University Tournament last weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
Riley, a freshman from Taos, N.M., was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after posting goals against Vanderbilt and University of Alabama-Birmingham, both NCAA Tournament teams in 2006. Friday, against the Commodores, she scored her first collegiate goal during the 67th minute as the Zags shutout Vandy 2-0. Riley continued her scoring ways on Sunday, posting the game-winning-goal at the 82:06 mark as Gonzaga defeated UAB 2-1 to earn the tournament title.
Riley was the only freshman to be named to the team this week, as well as one of three representatives from West Coast Conference schools.
The Bulldogs, who are 4-2-0 this season, return home Friday to host Utah State University at Martin Field. The match marks the start of a four match home stand for the Zags. Gonzaga will also host Idaho State University (Sept. 28, 3 p.m.), UC Santa Barbara (Sept. 30, 1 p.m.) and Boise State University (Oct. 2, 3 p.m.) during the stretch.
