Top 25 showdown pits Santa Clara at BYU in WCC opener

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Six more WCC teams will begin their chase for a conference title this week, highlighted by Santa Clara's visit to BYU. The top 25 showdown will take place Friday at 6 p.m. MT in Provo.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • 2011 WCC Co-Champ San Diego opened conference play with a 2-0 victory at San Francisco. Six more WCC teams begin conference play this weekend.

  • Four WCC teams rank in the Top 25 in the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). BYU ranks fourth, Santa Clara is eighth, Pepperdine is 19th, and Portland is 24th. The RPI is used to help select at-large teams for the NCAA Tournament.

  • Pepperdine senior Callie Payetta is the WCC Player of the Week. Payetta scored the game-winning goal in Pepperdine's 1-0 upset over No. 5 Boston College in Massachusetts last weekend.

  • Three West Coast Conference teams are ranked in this week's NSCAA Top 25 poll: BYU (6), Pepperdine (19), and Santa Clara (21). Portland is also receiving votes.

  • Five different WCC players have registered three game-winning goals apiece: Amanda LeCave (PEP), Kasey Rubosky (GON), Carlee Holmoe (BYU), Jessica Ringwood (BYU), and Mackenzie Krieser (USF).

  • West Coast Conference members have made 65 NCAA Tournament appearances, 19 Final Four appearances, and have won three national titles (Santa Clara in 2001, Portland in 2002, 2005).
