SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The first to weekends of West Coast Conference women's soccer play are in the books, and action is heating up as we reach October's midway point. A busy week kicks off Thursday afternoon when Portland visits Gonzaga in the Pilots' WCC opener.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • 2011 WCC Co-Champ San Diego is getting hot at the right time. After a slow start against a challenging schedule, the Toreros have won three straight (2-0-0 in WCC play).

  • Four WCC teams rank in the Top 25 in the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). BYU ranks fifth, Santa Clara is 10th, Portland is 17th, and Pepperdine is 21st. The RPI is used to help select at-large teams for the NCAA Tournament.

  • A pair of WCC teams, Portland and BYU, lead the nation in average home attendance through Oct. 7.

  • Saint Mary's sophomore Vicki Shimkus is the WCC Player of the Week. Shimkus scored twice -- including the game-winner in the 110th minute -- in a win at Gonzaga.

  • Three West Coast Conference teams are ranked in this week's NSCAA Top 25 poll. Unbeaten in its last 10, BYU has earned its highest ranking in school history (5), while Pepperdine (17), and Santa Clara (18) are also ranked.

  • The three ranked WCC teams have done a great job of protecting their home pitch. BYU, Pepperdine, and Santa Clara have gone a combined 18-0-2 at home this season.

  • West Coast Conference members have made 65 NCAA Tournament appearances, 19 Final Four appearances, and have won three national titles (Santa Clara in 2001, Portland in 2002, 2005).
