Portland travels to San Diego for ESPNU clash

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The national spotlight turns to Torero Stadium on Friday night, as first-place San Diego hosts visiting Portland in a nationally-televised match on ESPNU. The Toreros have won four straight, including three consecutive road shutouts to begin conference play. Meanwhile, perennial WCC power Portland, the nation's leader in home attendance, seeks its first road win in conference play.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • 2011 WCC Co-Champ San Diego has won four straight matches, including three road shutouts to begin WCC play.

  • Four WCC teams rank in the Top 30 in the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). BYU ranks fourth, Santa Clara is ninth, Pepperdine is 13th, and Portland is 30th. The RPI is used to help select at-large teams for the NCAA Tournament.

  • Portland and BYU, lead the nation in average home attendance through Oct. 14. The Pilots average 3,567 fans per contest, and the Cougars average is 3,220.

  • Pepperdine senior GK Roxanne Barker is the WCC Player of the Week. Barker notched six saves -- including five in the second half -- as the Waves topped No. 18 Santa Clara, 2-1. Pepperdine is unbeaten in its last 27 regular season home contests.

  • Three West Coast Conference teams are ranked in this week's NSCAA Top 25 poll. BYU has earned its highest ranking in school history (5), while Pepperdine (15), and Santa Clara (19) are also ranked.

  • The three ranked WCC teams have done a great job of protecting their home pitch. BYU, Pepperdine, and Santa Clara have gone a combined 21-0-2 at home this season.

  • West Coast Conference members have made 65 NCAA Tournament appearances, 19 Final Four appearances, and have won three national titles (Santa Clara in 2001, Portland in 2002, 2005).
