UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND CLINCHES FOURTH STRAIGHT WCC WOMEN'S SOCCER TITLE AND 12TH OVERALL
PORTLAND, Ore. --- The second-ranked University of Portland women's soccer team clinched its fourth consecutive West Coast Conference Championship, and 12th overall, with a 2-0 home win over the University of San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.
The win, coupled with Loyola Marymount's 2-0 victory at Santa Clara on Sunday, gives the Pilots (18-1-0 overall, 6-0-0 WCC) a two-match lead with only one conference match remaining.
The Pilots have not allowed a goal in six conference matches this year and are looking to join the 1998 Santa Clara squad as the only WCC teams to accomplish that feat. Portland, which has won 27 consecutive WCC matches, will look to conclude its fourth consecutive undefeated conference campaign when it visits Saint Mary's (8-7-3, 2-4-0) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Santa Clara (12-5-2, 4-2-0), which is ranked 10th in the country, can clinch second place in the WCC with a win or tie at Pepperdine (8-6-5, 1-3-2) on Saturday. San Diego (10-7-2, 3-3-0) visits Loyola Marymount (10-5-2, 2-2-2) on Friday in a matchup of teams in the hunt for an NCAA at-large berth, while San Francisco (4-13-2, 0-4-2) plays host to Gonzaga (8-10-1, 3-3-0) on Saturday afternoon.
The tournament field for the 2010 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships will be announced on Monday, November 8, at approximately 1:30 p.m. (Pacific Time) on ESPNU.
