Five WCC Players Earn Academic Honor

Five West Coast Conference women's soccer players were named to the ESPN The Magazine College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District VIII All-Academic women's soccer team announced Thursday.Three University of Portland players earned the academic honor, while Gonzaga University landed two players on the three-team list. Portland's Kari Evans was the WCC's lone representative on the first team, while teammates Cori Alexander and Rachel Rapinoe were selected to the third team. Gonzaga's Nanda McCormick was named to the second team, while fellow Zag Beth Drollinger was tabbed for third team honors.

Evans, a senior defender from Glendale, AZ, has helped anchor one of the top defenses in the WCC. Evans, who boasts a 3.86 GPA in Biology, has helped the Pilots limit their opponents to just 13 goals this season en route to 10 shutouts. Rapinoe, a junior from Redding, CA, has enjoyed a breakout season, scoring four goals and assisting on another seven Pilot goals. Rapinoe owns a 3.35 GPA in Life Science. Alexander, the 2005 College Cup Defensive MVP, has started all 19 games in the net for UP, posting a 0.67 goals against average. Alexander has earned a 3.45 GPA in Organizational Communication.

McCormick, playing just her second season of soccer after beginning her collegiate career at Gonzaga as a member of the basketball team, leads the team and is tied for seventh in the WCC in goals with seven. McCormick, a native of Seattle, Wash., has a 3.30 GPA in business administration. Drollinger leads the team in assists with four and is second on the all-time Gonzaga career assists list with nine. Drollinger, who hails from Yakima, Wash., has a 3.60 GPA in civil engineering.
