#20 San Diego defeats Saint Marys 3-1

Moraga, CA - Amy Epsten scored a pair of goals to lead the No 20 ranked San Diego Toreros to a 3-1 West Coast Conference win over the Saint Mary's women's soccer team on Friday afternoon from Garaventa Field. With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 6-10-2 overall and 0-6-0 in WCC play, while the nationally ranked Toreros improved to 13-2-3 and 4-1-1 in conference play.

San Diego's wasted little time scoring its first goal, which came less than five minutes into the game. The goal at 4:53 was set up when Kristine Mock dribbled through the Saint Mary's defense. Mock touched a pass off to Epsten, who took one touch before taking a shot from 12 yards out, beating SMC goalkeeper Tara Larson to the far post.

Twenty minutes later San Diego added to its lead, this time it was Mock on the receiving end of a goal-scoring pass. Mock's first of goal of the season resulted from a corner kick off the foot of Leigh Ann Robinson from the right corner. Mock battled a Saint Mary's defender to get to the cross and would deflect the ball off her body inside the near post.

After leading 2-0 at halftime, San Diego extended its lead to three goals when Epsten scored her second goal of the game and he conference leading 11th of the season 9:31 into the second half. After a shot by Robinson was saved by Larson, the long rebound was collected by Epsten. Esten took a couple dribbles to clear the SMC defender, creating an open shot on goal.

Saint Mary's got on the scoreboard at 67:25 when Stefani Rocco scored her first goal of the season. Following a free kick by Jessica Menzhuber, Mercede Koning flicked the ball forward to a wide open Rocco who was attacking the goal. Rocco was alone behind the USD defense to score the easy goal from six yards out.

San Diego controlled the flow of play for most of the game, which resulted in the Toreros claiming a 15-5 advantage in goals and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. San Diego starting goalkeeper Brittany Cameron played 64 minutes and made one save before giving way to Kare Cook for the final 25 minutes.

Saint Mary's will wrap-up its 2007 campaign in the road against Santa Clara next week. The Gaels will travel to play the Broncos on Saturday, November 10 in a 1 p.m. game at Buck Shaw Stadium.
