SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the first time in West Coast Conference history, three teams – BYU, Portland and Santa Clara – shared the regular season championship. All three programs were well represented on the 2013 All-WC Women’s Soccer Team, combining to capture 12 of a possible 22 spots on the first and second teams along with sweeping the major individual honors.

Santa Clara senior midfielder Julie Johnston captured WCC Player of the Year honors, while BYU senior Erica Owens earned her second straight Goalkeeper of the Year selection. Portland senior defender Amanda Frisbie was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year, while her teammate, midfielder Allison Wetherington, was selected as the Freshman of the Year.

Portland’s Garrett Smith was chosen by his peers as Coach of the Year for the sixth time. All five awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on by the WCC's 10 head coaches.

Johnston is the eighth Bronco to capture WCC Player of the Year accolades. The senior tallied six goals and five assists during league play for Santa Clara and registered 12 goals and seven assists overall. Johnston was a key cog in an offensive juggernaut for the Broncos, which outscored their WCC foes 36-9.

Owens was the final line of defense for the WCC’s stingiest defense. The Cougars posted a league-best six shutouts in nine conference matches and Owens led the WCC in shutouts and GAA (0.44). For the season the senior posted nine shutouts with a GAA of 0.68. The Goalkeeper of the Year award was instituted in 2011 and Owens is the first two-time winner.

Frisbie becomes the eighth Pilot to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors and makes her second appearance on the first team after making the top squad last year as a forward. Frisbie and the Pilots allowed just five goals during the 2013 WCC season and the senior contributed to four league shutouts. In addition, Frisbie chipped in seven goals (four game-winners) and an assist for 15 points.

Wetherington is the 12th Pilot to capture Freshman of the Year honors and made an immediate impact, scoring four goals with six assists for 14 points. The Portland rookie made 14 starts, including all nine during WCC play.

A six-time Coach of the Year winner, Smith guided Portland to its seventh WCC title during his tenure as head coach on The Bluff. The Pilots constructed a 10-match winning streak en route to a share of the 2013 league title.

A perennial multi-bid conference, BYU, Portland and Santa Clara will all represent the WCC in the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship with all three teams hosting opening round matches, beginning Friday.

A No. 4 seed, Santa Clara earned the WCC’s automatic qualifier by virtue of point differential, while BYU and Portland each captured at-large berths in the 2013 field. The Broncos (No. 8), the Pilots (No. 12) and the Cougars (No. 19) all entered the final weekend of the 2013 regular season ranked in the top-20 nationally in the NSCAA poll.

In all, the WCC has made 72 NCAA appearances, culminating in 19 Final Four trips and three national titles. Portland won the College Cup in 2002 and 2005, with Santa Clara winning the title in 2001.
