Portland, San Diego continue NCAA Road Show Friday Night

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- After thrilling road wins via shootout in the opening round, a pair of West Coast Conference teams remain alive in their quest for the College Cup. Both San Diego and Portland will hit the road once again, participating in the NCAA Second Round Friday. The Pilots will take on top seed Florida State in Memphis, while the Toreros will play at No. 2 UCLA under the lights Friday night.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • This year marked the first time since 2005 four West Coast Conference teams participated in the NCAA Tournament.

  • All four WCC first round matches went to overtime, with San Diego (UC Irvine) and Portland (Oregon State) advancing via penalty kicks on the road. Santa Clara (Cal) and Pepperdine (LBSU) fell in OT at home.

  • West Coast Conference members have made 65 NCAA Tournament appearances, 19 Final Four appearances, and have won three national titles (Santa Clara in 2001, Portland in 2002, 2005).

  • San Diego senior forward Stephanie Ochs was named WCC Player of the Year. Ochs is the first Torero to win that award.

  • San Diego senior Natalie Garcia is the WCC Defensive Player of the Year.

  • Santa Clara senior Bianca Henninger is the winner of the first-ever WCC Goalkeeper of the Year award.

  • Pepperdine's Lynn Williams garnered WCC Freshman of the Year recognition.

  • Pepperdine's Tim Ward was voted WCC Coach of the Year by his peers. It's the second time Ward has captured this honor, after previously earning the Coach of the Year award in 2002.
