LOS ANGELES -- San Diego women's soccer saw its 2011 season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Long Beach State Sunday afternoon in a wet, soggy, rain-filled match in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament at Drake stadium.
San Diego finished the season with a 12-8-2 overall record and advanced further than any other USD women's soccer team in program history. With the win, the 49ers improve to 18-5-1 and they will advance on to play Duke on Friday in the Elite Eight.
Long Beach was able to score the match's lone goal in the 56th minute, as Ashley Roese found the ball at her feet, and she then one-timed it past the USD defense and into the back of the net.
USD outshot the 49ers 9-8, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Courtney Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded one save. Kaitlyn Gustaves picked up the in goal for LBSU, as she allowed no goals and recorded two saves.
