ST. GEORGE, Utah - The LMU softball team dropped its season opener, falling to Dixie State, 8-0, in five innings in the first game of the BYU/UVSC Red Desert Classic. Newcomer Kylie Conroy had LMU's first hit of the season and advanced to third after a stolen base for LMU's best scoring opportunity of the day.
After Dixie State scored in the bottom of the first, Conroy led off the second inning with a single. She stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tracy Cook. But a strikeout and a popup ended the LMU threat.
DSU added a second run in the third, but scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Cook led off the top of the fifth with LMU's second single of the game, but a fielder's choice, and a flyout gave the Lions two outs. MiaSarah Cesena reached base on an error, giving LMU two base runners, but a popup ended the inning.
Dixie State tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the run rule and end the game.
There were several new faces on the field for LMU, including starters Conroy (second base) and J.J. Hartung (third base). Pitchers Tiffany Gonzales and Melissa Dykema also appeared in their first LMU game.
Tiffany Pagano took the loss for LMU, allowing six earned runs on five hits and five walks in 3.1 innings of work.
The Lions return to action on Friday for day two of the Red Desert Classic. They will take on Utah Valley State College and Idaho State on Friday afternoon.
