Big Innings in Friday Sweep

LAS CRUCES, NM - LMU used big innings to record 5-3 wins over Buffalo and Central Michigan this morning at the Troy Cox Classic, hosted by New Mexico State. The Lions scored all five runs in the third, including a three-run home run by Kylie Conroy, for the first win of the day over the Bulls. Tied 1-1 heading into the fifth, LMU scored four runs in the inning for the 5-3 win over the Chippewas.

The first game was scoreless until the third inning when Buffalo used two singles and a stolen base to take a 1-0 lead. Chelsie Tysdal led off the bottom of the inning with her first hit of the day and advanced to second on a groundout. She advanced to third on a single by Tiffany Gonzales. The Lions tied the game on Margo Pineda's RBI single, and took the lead on Conroy's three-run home run.

Tracy Cook earned a walk following the home run, and came around to score on Christine Foley's RBI double to give the Lions a 5-1 lead. Buffalo added two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but could not get any closer.

Tysdal was 2-for-2 in the game, while Foley was 2-for-3. Conroy's home run was her sixth in seven games, including her third straight game with a home run. Tiffany Pagano earned the win, striking out eight in 4.1 innings of work.

Game two was similar to game one, with LMU getting most of its runs from a big inning. The Lions struck first, going up 1-0 in the third on an RBI single by Gonzales. After CMU tied things up with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, the Lions answered with four runs in the top of the fifth.

MiaSarah Cesena earned a walk to start the inning, and Kirsten Slouber followed with her first home run of the year to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. The Lions took advantage of two CMU errors, and Foley was able to bring home two more LMU runs on a single to give the Lions a 5-1 lead.

CMU rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3, but Melissa Dykema kept the Chippewas scoreless in the seventh to hold on for the win. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits for the complete game win, striking out four.

Gonzales had her first multi-hit game of her career, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Foley had her third multi-hit game of the year, and second of the day, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

With the wins, LMU improves to 7-2 on the season. The Lions have won four straight, and will face UTEP on Saturday afternoon in day two of the Troy Cox Classic.
