Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team dropped today's doubleheader against Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks managed to pull out a 5-0 victory in game one and a 2-0 victory in game two. The Gaels fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Gaels ran into tough pitching in game one of the double header. Humboldt's Lizzy Prescot threw a complete game shutout while striking out 11 in seven innings. Molly Bergeson managed to get two hits in the game while Lauren Mello and Katherine Delpit both recorded a hit.
Saint Mary's starter Megan Galloway struck out five batters in six innings, including striking out the side in the second inning. Sophomore Marlena Green pitches a perfect seventh inning, quickly retiring her three batters.
Game two was truly a pitcher's dual. Gael hurler Chelsea Loftis and Humboldt State pitcher Tracy Motzny both threw terrific games. The two starters combined for 12 scoreless innings. Unfortunately for the Gaels the Lumberjacks put two runs on the board in the fifth inning. This would be all the offense that Humboldt State would need to pull out the win.
Kate Albaugh threw a perfect seventh inning for the Gaels in game two. Like Green in game one, she quickly retired her three batters.
The Gael offense was kept relatively quiet in the second game. Newcomer Molly Bergeson went 1-3 in game two. She has hit safely in all four of the Gaels games and is boasting a .417 average, tallying five hits in 12 at-bats so far this season.
The Gaels return to action this Tuesday when they make the short trek to Berkeley to face off against the California Golden Bears. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Berkeley, CA.
