Davis, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team played their first game of the UC Davis Invite today. They Gaels dropped the barn burner to Kentucky by a score of 13-5. Senior Lauren Mello hit her third home run of the season. Sandra Ruezga hit her first round tripper of the season.
Kentucky managed to get on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second Katherine Delpit walked and Sandra Ruezga singled. Freshman Jenna Smith doubled in Delpit and Ruezga scored on an error by the shortstop.
The Gaels lead did not last for long. Kentucky put up a five spot in the next half innings, giving the Wildcats a 6-1 lead. They led off the inning with a homerun before the loaded the bases and tripling in three.
The Gaels would attempt to climb back into the game the next half inning. With Molly Bergeson on base, Lauren Mello got a hold of a pitch, pulling the ball over the left field fence. Mello now has six runs and six RBI. The Gaels would add another run on a `shot to go' by Sandra Ruezga, her first homerun of the season.
The Gaels had pulled within one before giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 7-5. The game would remain close until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Wildcats took advantage of some errors and added a home run to take a 13-5 lead. The game would end with that score.
The Gaels will compete in four more games while at the UC Davis Invite. Tomorrow they will face off against UC Riverside and Invite host UC Davis. On Sunday they will face UC Riverside as well as PCSC opponent Sacramento State.
