The University of San Diego softball team (3-3) blasted out a 9-2 victory Friday afternoon in dominating fashion over the Siena College Saints (0-2) on day one of the San Diego State University Aztec Invitational softball tournament.
In the bottom of the second inning, San Diego's hitting turned red hot as they posted five runs on four hits. With one out, Kathleen Bonja singled to third base. Alicia Massei popped up to the shortstop for the second out. Virginia Fritsch reached on a Saints error advancing Bonja to second base. Katie Burk smashed a double into centerfield scoring Bonja and Fritsch. Keely Helbock zipped a line drive up the middle to centerfield scoring Burk as the Toreros took a 3-0 lead. Nichole Valenzuela reached first base on a second Saint's error moving Helbock over to second base. Carey Casciola singled to left field moving all the runners ahead one base, then on an error by the Saint's catcher, Valenzuela scored, Helbock advanced to third base, and Casciola moved to second base. On a pass ball by the Siena pitcher, Helbock came across to score for the final run of the inning and a 5-0 lead.
San Diego scored two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings bringing their lead to 9. Siena College made an attempt to decrease the deficit scoring two runs in the sixth inning, but the Torero lead was too insurmountable.
For USD, Bonja, Casciola, and Fritsch all finished with 2-for-4, with one run, and one RBI. Helbock finished 2-for-3, with two runs scored and one RBI. Casciola, Fritsch, Burk, and Helbock all recorded a double.
Defensively for the Toreros, Christina Haake pitched seven innings, striking out and allowing one hit. Jessi Waers made an appearance in the game, however she allowed one hit and walked three batters and was taken out.
The Toreros open up day two of the Aztec Invitational against North Dakota State University at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday from Aztec Softball Stadium.
