Softball Uses Late Inning Rally to Top UC Riverside

Feb. 24, 2007

Davis, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders in day two of competition at the UC Davis Invite. The Gaels defeated the Highlanders 3-2 with the help of a big fifth inning and effective pitching. The Gaels second game was called due to darkness. The game will be picked up tomorrow in the third inning.

Game 1

The Gaels were led by sophomore starter Marlena Green. Green kept the Gaels in the game, pitching five innings while striking out six batters. Green ran into a little bit of trouble in the second inning after giving a walk followed by a double. A wild pitch got the runner to third with no outs. Green responded in true form by striking out the next two batters and getting the third out on a groundball.

The Highlanders managed to scrape another run in the third inning after a runner walked, was sacrificed to second and doubled in. This would be the last run that Green would give up. Keeping the Gaels in the game through five it was a matter of time before the Gael offense struck; and it did in the fifth.

Bronwyn Russell led the Gael offense with a one out walk. Yesterday's big-bat brought it today as well doubling to left field and scoring Russell. Lauren Mello followed with a double of her own, tying the game at two as she drove in Ruezga. Sadie Dolcini got in on the action, she singled in Mello to give the Gaels a 3-2 lead. This would be all the offense the Gaels would need.

Kate Albaugh would come in and pitch a perfect sixth and seventh to record the save and lock up the win for the Gaels. She struck out two batters.
