Gaels Blow Up for 21 Runs in Two VictoriesGaels improve to 5-4 on the season

Davis, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team dropped 21 total runs in two games in the final day of competition at the UC Davis Invitational. The Gaels used this offense to earn victories against UC Davis and UC Riverside. Saint Mary's finishes the weekend going 3-1 in their four competitions. Their scheduled game against Sacramento State was not played due to time and light issues.

Game 1

The Gaels entered game one of today's action against UC Davis where it left off yesterday. The game was in the top of the third inning with the Aggies leading 2-1 with a runner on third. The runner was thrown out trying to score on a fielder's choice and the Gaels got out of the inning unscathed.

Sandra Ruezga and Lauren Mello led off the inning with singles. Sadie Dolcini walked to load the bases. Chelsea Loftis drove in Ruezga on a sac fly. Katherine Delpit walked to reload the bases. Megan Galloway doubled in the second and third runs of the inning. Lauren Clark drove in Delpit on a fly ball.

The Aggies managed to get a run back in the top of the fourth. This run was quickly made up by the Gaels senior slugger. Mello got a hold of ball and sent it over the left field wall, her fourth homer of the year.

UC Davis tied up the game in the fifth inning when they took advantage of some Gael errors. The game was tied going into the seventh inning. Molly Bergeson relieved Loftis to begin the seventh. The Aggies put up a fight when what would have been the leading run was thrown out at home by Kayla Aldridge.

With the game tied the games starting pitcher, Loftis, came through with a leadoff double. Delpit reached on an error allowing the Melissa Barretto, who came in to pinch-run for Loftis, to advance. With two outs the hero in the bottom of the seventh was the same as it was in the top of the seventh. Aldridge, who gunned the would-be lead run in the top of the seventh, hit a walk off single to score Barretto. The Gaels won the game by a score of 7-6. Bergeson earned her first win as a Gael.

Game 2

Saint Mary's jumped all over its competition in game two. The Gaels exploded for 14 runs on 18 hits.

UC Riverside got on the board with a run in the first inning. The Gaels got even when Sadie Dolcini hit her first home run of the season. Dolcini was the big bat for the Gaels in game two. She went 4-4 with two runs and four RBI.

Lauren Gardner, the games winning pitcher, breezed through the Highlanders second frame. The Gaels then dropped nine runs in the top of the third. The Gaels began the inning with five straight singles by Michelle Mathis, Bronwyn Russell, Bergeson, Mello and Dolcini. Loftis drove in Mello on a sac fly. Galloway added the sixth single in the inning for the Gaels. Ruezga broke the streak of singles when she struck a double. Mathis then hit her second double of the inning and the seventh Gael single of the inning. Russell then walked to load the bases. With three ducks on the pond pinch hitter Jenna Smith cleared the bases with a double. The Gaels had recorded nine runs on nine hits by the time the inning was through.

The Gaels added four more runs in the fifth inning when Mathis reached on an error and was driven in on a Bergeson triple. Mello doubled in Bergeson. This brought Dolcini to the bat. Dolcini hit her second home run of the contest to give the Gaels a 14-1 lead. The Highlanders would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth before the game was called due to the mercy rule.

After this weekend the Gaels improved to 5-4 on the season. Lauren Mello upped her average to .433 and now has 13 hits, 11 runs, 10 RBI and four homeruns. Along with Mello three other Gaels are also batting over .400: Chelsea Loftis (.467), Sadie Dolcini (.429) and Molly Bergeson (.400)
