SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros (7-4) posted a pair of wins cruising past the Siena College Saints (0-7) winning 8-0 in six innings in game one and 4-0 in game two.
The highlight of the doubleheader came in the first inning of game one. Nichole Valenzuela started off the hit parade with a single through the right side into the outfield. Carey Casciola followed with a single up the middle moving Valenzuela ahead one base. Kathleen Bonja singled to centerfield loading the bases for Danielle Treiber who reached first base on a fielder's choice. However, Valenzuela was thrown out at home preventing the run. Virginia Fritsch then singled to right centerfield scoring Casciola. Massei blasted a two-RBI double into the right-centerfield gap moving Fritsch to third and scoring Treiber and Bonja and lifting the Toreros to a 3-0 lead. Kaslin Tucker entered the game to pinch run for Massei. Katie Burk singled through the right side scoring Fritsch and moving Tucker to third base. Stacy Compton grounded out to the pitcher but not before allowing Tucker to score, and moving Burk to second base. Keely Helbock popped out to the infield ending the inning with five runs on six hits.
Casciola finished with a combined 4-for-7 over the two games with three runs scored and one RBI. Massei hit a combined 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run scored. Fritsch finished 3-for-6 over the two games with one double, one triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. As a team, San Diego posted 17 hits in the two games with five doubles.
Defensively for the Toreros, Haake recorded the win in game one allowing only three hits and striking out four batters. Haake moves to 3-1 overall this season. Katie Jo Nelson also posted a complete game victory pitching six innings allowing only two hits and striking out four batters. Nelson struck out four batters and moves to 2-2 on the season overall.
San Diego returns to the USD Softball Complex on Friday for a pair of games to open the 2007 USD Invitational Softball Tournament. USD opens against Memphis University at 4:00 p.m. and University of Texas-El Paso at 6:00 p.m.
