Honolulu, HI - Saint Mary's softball dropped two tough matches in today's opener of the Mahalili Kipa Sofbtall Tournament. The Gaels fell to No. 21 Georgia by a score of 8-0. In game two the Gaels were defeated by Kent State in a close 3-1 match.
The Bulldogs scored a run on a sac fly in the first and manage to string together some base hits in the second inning to put up four runs in the first two frames. After a run scoring single followed by a two run home run in the sixth inning and another run scoring in the seventh the Bulldogs had an 8-0 lead. They won by this score.
The Gaels were hard pressed to find pitches they could hit against their No. 21 ranked opponent. Senior Lauren Mello struck one of the Gael hits, going 1-2 on the day. Jenna Smith added the other Gael hit going 1-3 on the day.
Saint Mary's and Kent State were involved in a close game. Neither team scored a run for the first three frames. Pitcher Megan Galloway kept the Gaels in the game both with her pitching and her offense. The right hander gave up only three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings.
After Galloway gave up a run in the bottom of the fourth, she came to the plate. Galloway got a hold of a pitch and pulled it over the left field fence tying the game at 1-1. Kent State took back the lead after a single and a few errors got a runner to third base. This runner came around to score on a ground out. A throwing error added another unearned run in the inning leading to the final score of 3-1 in favor of the Kent State Golden Flashes.
The Gaels will return to action tomorrow for the second day of the Mahalini Kipa Softball Tournament when they face No. 23 Oregon and tournament host Hawaii.
