SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team posted two losses in the opening day of the USD Invitational softball tournament. The Toreros dropped game one against the University of Memphis by a score of 2-4, and game two against the University of Texas-El Paso by a score of 3-4.
In game one, Memphis scored one run in the third and fourth innings, and a pair of runs in the sixth inning. The Toreros scored their two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Massei was at bat reaching first base on an error allowing Treiber and Fritsch to score.
In game two, San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Toreros held on for two innings before allowing the Miners to tie the game which went into extra innings. UTEP scored three runs in the eighth inning. USD responded with two games and were unable to pull out the win.
Katie Jo Nelson records the loss against Memphis while striking out four batters. Jennifer Ellenbeck tallies the loss against UTEP while striking out one batter.
Offensively for San Diego, Ellenbeck hit a combined 3-for-7 with one double, one run, and one RBI. Helbock finished a combined 2-for-6 with one double and one RBI. Fritsch finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
The USD invitational softball tournament continues Saturday with six more games. USD open at 9:00 a.m. against UC Riverside followed by Cal State Northridge at 11:00 a.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
