Honolulu, HI -A day after the Gaels snapped the No. 17/22 Oregon Ducks school record 18 game winning streak they faced off against them for a second time at the Mahilini Kipa Softball Tournament. Unfortunately for Saint Mary's the result of Saturday's game did not match Friday's. Oregon managed to get on the board in the first inning before putting up a few runs in later innings and then dropping a fistful of runs in the seventh. The final score in Honolulu was 10-1 in favor of Oregon.
The Gaels ran into some tough pitching today. Melissa Rice recorded the complete game for Ducks. She struck out five batters and only walked one. Rice gave up a run in the seventh inning of the ball game. She only allowed the Gaels to tally three hits in the ball game. Rice improved to 9-1 on the season.
The Oregon offense awakened after only scoring one run yesterday. The Ducks dropped three runs in the first inning of the game and five runs in the final inning. They recorded a total of 10 runs on 15 hits. Seven different Ducks crossed the plate as they defeated the Gaels.
Molly Bergeson, Sadie Dolcini and Megan Galloway were the only Gaels to record hits today. Dolcini doubled in the seventh which led to the Gaels lone run. Melissa Barretto pinch ran for Dolcini and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Barretto scored on a Galloway ground out. Galloway recorded the Gaels only RBI with that ground out.
In five games at the Mahilini Kipa Softball tournament the Gaels have played four nationally ranked teams. The Gaels defeated their first nationally ranked team since 2004 yesterday. The Gaels will against Kent State tomorrow morning in the final day of the Mahilini Kipa Softball Tournament.
