Honolulu, HI - The Saint Mary's softball team finished up at the Mahilini Kipa Softball tournament today when the met up with the Kent State Golden Flashes. Kent State proved to be too much for the Gaels to handle as the Golden Flashes won the game 9-0. On the weekend the Gaels faced very tough competition including three nationally ranked teams. They finished with a 1-5 record. They defeated the No. 17/22 Oregon Ducks this past Friday ending Oregon's school record 18 game winning streak.
Kent State overpowered the Gaels today. Marlena Green started for the Gaels but gave up five runs, in 1.0+ innings. Molly Bergeson pitched four innings of relief for the Gaels but gave up four runs, three earned.
Kent State did most of their damage in their first two innings. The Golden Flashes scored two in the first after a walk and a two run homerun. In the second the Golden Flashes scored six runs. The six runs came off of a slew of singles and a home run.
The Gaels were hard to find any offense in today's game. Robinson, the starter for the Golden Flashes, pitched four string innings as she earned the win. She only allowed three hits and gave up no runs. Sadie Dolcini struck on of the three Gael hits.
Three singles led to Kent State's run in the fifth. That led to the final score of 9-0 in favor of Kent State.
Although the Gaels went 1-5 on the weekend they played very well. They ran into some tough competition. Saint Mary's played four games against three nationally ranked teams and managed to pull out a win against No. 17/22 Oregon. The Gaels were one out away from winning against back-to-back ranked opponents against No. 25 Hawaii when a close call at the play was called in favor for the Rainbow Warriors instead of the Gaels.
Sadie Dolcini was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Mahilini Kipa Softball Tournament for her efforts this weekend.
