Saint Mary's Shuts Out Eastern Illinois In Opening Day of Tourney

Terre Haute, IN- The Saint Mary's softball team earned one victory and dropped two games in the opening day of the Indiana State Tournament. The Gaels earned their first victory of the tournament against Eastern Illinois with a score of 9-0. Freshman hurler, Marlena Green earned the victory for the Gaels, the second of her collegiate career. SMC advances to 2-12 on the season.

Marlena Green held Eastern Illinois to just four hits as she pitcher her first complete game of her collegiate career and improved her record to 2-0 on the season. The Gaels combined for seven hits to defeat the Panthers 9-0 in Saint Mary's second game of the tournament.

Saint Mary's exploded in the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits against starting pitcher Kary Mackie. Saint Mary's tacked on two more runs in the third when Shelly Taketa and Lauren Clark both scored on a single down the right field line by Megan Galloway. The Gaels tacked on three more when Marcia-Marie Euker and Bronwyn Russell both scored on a double by Taketa and Sandra Ruezga scored on an error by the catcher.

Offensively, the Gaels were led by freshman Clark and senior Taketa who each went 2-for-4 in game two. Russell (1-for-2), Galloway (1-for-3), and freshman, Kayla Aldridge (1-for-3) combined for the other hits.

SMC opened the tournament with a tough 4-0 loss to host Indiana State. The Gaels posted four hits including doubles by Lauren Mello and Shelly Taketa in the first and fifth innings respectively. Saint Mary's left runners on base in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings.

Galloway was tagged with the loss for the Gaels, pitching a complete game giving up four runs on five hits and striking out six. Galloway currently leads the team in strikeouts with 17 and is tied for complete games with two on the season.

Saint Mary's dropped the final game of opening day 10-5 against the Western Illinois Westerwinds. The Gaels posted five runs on 10 hits against winning pitcher Kamren Ferguson who threw her second complete game of the season.

WIU started off strong posting three runs on three hits in the first innings. Saint Mary's came back in the second when Galloway who reached on an error scored on a single by freshman, Sadie Dolcini. The second run of the inning came when Dolcini scored on a single by Russell. The Westerwinds added another run in the bottom of the third while Saint Mary's tied it up in the third posting two more runs on two hits, including a homer by Galloway bringing in freshman, Lauren Clark. This is Galloway's first home run of her collegiate career. Saint Mary's last effort came in the sixth when they posted one more run when Russell scored on a single by Marcia-Marie Euker.

Chelsea Loftis was tagged with the loss for the Gaels, throwing the first four innings, giving up seven runs on ten hits and striking out two. Lauren Gardner added two innings of relief, giving up one run and two hits. Senior, Justine Larsen threw one inning from the circle allowing two runs and striking out two.

Saint Mary's returns to action Sunday, March 5 to close the tournament. In game one, the Gaels face Western Illinois in a 10:30 am match. SMC's final game of the tourney is against Eastern Illinois. The first pitch is slated for 12:30 pm.
