Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team split their doubleheader against the UC Davis Aggies. The Gaels came back to win the first game 6-4. The Aggies won the second game by a score of 3-0. The Gaels improved to 2-1 against the Aggies on the season.
The Aggies got on the board early, scoring all four of their runs before the Gaels managed to plate a single run. They were aided by a two run homer in the first. The Aggies added one run in the second and third to give them a total of four runs.
The Gaels got on board in the third inning. Lauren Mello singled to lead off the inning. She then stole second and scored on a single by the Gaels pitcher Megan Galloway. Galloway earned the win in the game. She pitched five and struck out three. After giving up four runs the first three innings she calmed down and earned the victory.
Galloway walked out of the circle in the fifth and gave her offense a chance to do some damage. Mello led off another inning by getting on base, this time via the base on balls. Sadie Dolcini walked and Galloway singled to load the bases. Katherine Delpit doubled in two runs to give the Gaels the second and third runs of the game. After a walk loaded the bases a sac fly by Melissa Barretto scored Galloway tying the game at 3-3. A Molly Bergeson single plated another run to give the Gaels a one run lead. Galloway would end the inning in line to earn the win.
Lauren Gardner was perfect in two innings of relief as she earned the save.
The Gaels scored again in the sixth inning. Once again Mello led off the inning and came around to score. Mello led the inning off with what looked like a homerun, but the ball hit the top of the wall and bounced back into play. Mello earned a double. Chelsea Loftis came in as a pinch hitter. She struck a single that scored Mello. That gave the game its final score of 6-4 in favor of Saint Mary's.
Galloway earned the win and Garnder recorded the save. Bergeson went 3-4 with an RBI and Mello was 2-3 with three runs in the first game.
Game two of the double header was truly a pitchers duel. Unfortunate for the Gaels they came on the wrong end of the match. The Gaels lost the game 3-0. The Aggies recorded two unearned runs in the first inning. UC Davis added another unearned run in the fifth. That would account for all the runs scored in game two.
Aggies pitcher Lindsay Tognetti was lights out on the mound. She struck out 15 batters and did not allow a run. She only gave up three hits as she kept the Gaels offense relatively quiet.
Gaels hurler Chelsea Loftis pitched very well today. Unfortunately for her, the Gaels defense and offense could not match her performance. Loftis went six innings while scattering five hits. She gave up three unearned runs as her defense gave up five errors behind her.
Loftis earned one of the Gaels hits in game two Smith and Bergeson recorded the other two.
The Gaels will return to action this weekend when the host the Saint Mary's Invite. Competition will start on Friday and continue throughout the weekend.
