Castagno Throws Two-Hitter, Broncos Cruise To 6-0 Victory Over Idaho State

March 7, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team earned their third win of the season Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader with Idaho State at Marsalli Park. Jerrica Castagno pitched a shutout, two-hitter and the Broncos put together a five-fun fourth inning to defeat the Bengals by a score of 6-0.

Castagno was brilliant in what became her second win of the season. She pitched all seven innings, had six strikeouts and gave up only three walks. Bengals baserunners advanced as far as second base just twice in the game and didn't get any further. Castagno's longest inning was the seventh, in which two hitters reached base - a large number considering that in three other innings, only a single runner reached base.

The Broncos took care of business at the plate. Angela Kabanuck put Santa Clara on the scoreboard in the third inning, blasting her 5th home run to left center field.

Then in the fourth inning, two singles and an error loaded the bases for senior Sara Overmier. Her single through the gap on the right side scored two runs. Overmier would finish the game with two hits and two RBIs.

The very next batter, Angela Kabanuck, sent a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Emily Batt from third. Kabanuck also finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Three batters later, freshman Kaitlyn Rauschnot's base hit scored two more and the Broncos lead was increased to 6-0. The other hot hitter for the Broncos was junior Jackie Morales, who went 2-for-3.

Having improved their record to 3-19, the Broncos are set to take on Idaho State again at 2:00 p.m.
