Moraga, CA-The Saint Mary's softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader against the number 6 ranked California Golden Bears, Wednesday afternoon from Cottrell Field. In game one of the doubleheader, the Gaels fell 7-0, giving freshman hurler Marlena Green her first loss of the season season. SMC dropped game two by the score of 9-2 to California. The pair of losses drops Saint Mary's to 2-16 overall. California improved to 15-2 overall.
In game one, California shut out the Gaels 7-0, giving Kristina Thorson the win and Saint Mary's Marlena Green the loss. In 5.2 innings pitched, Green gave up seven runs on ten hits while striking out one. Senior, Justine Larsen came in for 1.1 innings of relief, giving up no runs and no hits.
In game two, Saint Mary's tallied two runs on four hits but fell 9-2 to California who posted 13 hits. The Gaels' two runs came in the bottom of the fifth when Sadie Dolcini reached on a walk and Kayla Adridge pinch ran and scored on an error by the pitcher. Euker reached base on a bunt and scored on a single up the middle by Sandra Ruezga.
Megan Galloway was tagged with the loss in game two, throwing 6.0 innings and giving up 12 hits, eight earned runs and striking out two. Lauren Gardner came in for an inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
Saint Mary's will return to action next Tuesday when they host the Southern Illinois Salukis for a non-conference doubleheader from Cottrell Field. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 pm.
