Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team playing in its first competition of the Saint Mary's invite this afternoon. The host Gaels defeated the Idaho State Bengals by a score of 5-1. The Gaels were aided by two 2-run home runs off the bats of Megan Galloway and Katherine Delpit. The Gaels improve to 8-10 on the season.
Idaho State got on board in the first innging. The Bengals put together four straight singles to score their only run on the ball game. The Bengals had the bases loaded with one out in the first when Kate Albaugh struck out one batter and got another to ground out to end the threat.
Albaugh, the games winning pitcher looked good in seven innings of work. She only allowed one run to cross the plate after having the bases loaded and only one out in the first. After the first the game was in her hands. Idaho State would only record two hits after the first inning while striking out six times. Albaugh finished the day with eight strike outs and recorded her second complete game victory of the season.
Offensively, the Gaels took good swings the entire ballgame. The threatened with the long ball several times in the first two innings including recording three straight deep fly ball outs in the second inning. It was just a matter of time before the Gael sluggers got things underway.
Molly Bergeson doubled with one out in the third inning. Bronwyn Russell followed suit with a double of her own which tied the game at 1-1. After Russell advanced to third base on a fly ball off the bat of Lauren Mello Megan Galloway came to bat. Galloway got a pitch to hit and stuck the ball over the left field fence. Galloway gave the Gaels a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth Galloway got on base with a walk. She would come around to score again when Katherine Delpit got in on the action. Delpit hit her first four-bagger of her collegiate career and gave the Gaels the 5-1 lead. This would go on to be the games final score.
The Gaels will return to action tomorrow. They will face off against Stony Broon at 10:00 am and play Utah Valley State at Noon. These games will be held from Cottrell Field for Day 2 of the Saint Mary's Invitational.
