Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team split today's action in the Saint Mary's Invitational. The Gaels defeated Stony Brook by a score of 5-1. The Gaels then dropped their game against Utah Valley State by a score of 9-2. After the first two days of competition at the SMC Invite, the four teams have been seeded and will compete in a tournament tomorrow. The Gaels have earned a No. 2 seed. They will face off against No. 3 Stony Brook. The winner of that game will meet the winner of the No. 1 Utah Valley State vs. No. 4 Idaho State game in a championship game.
Game one saw the Gaels meet up with Stony Brook. This game was dominated by pitching. The only scoring that took place was in the first inning. The Gaels, the designated visiting team, got on board in the first inning when Molly Bergeson and Bronwyn Russell led off the inning with singles. With two outs Chelsea Loftis singled in the first run of the ballgame. The Gaels scored their second run on a wild pitch. That would be all the runs the Gaels would need to earn the win.
Stony Brook got on the board after recording back-to-back doubles in the first inning.
After the first inning the game was all about pitching. Gael hurler Chelsea Loftis did not allow another run the rest of the game. She earned the victory pitching 7.0 innings striking out five and only walking one. Loftis gave up five hits; only three after the first inning. On the week Loftis has pitched 13.0 innings and has only given up one earned run. She has lowered her ERA to 2.50 on the season.
Loftis and the Gaels earned the 2-1 win. Offensively, Bergeson led the Gaels. She got on base everytime she got into the batters box. She finished game one going 2-2 with two walks and a run scored. She is leading the team with a batting average of .408.
The Gaels ran into a hot Utah Valley State team. The Wolverines downed the Gaels 9-2 en route to earning the No. 1 seed for tomorrow's competition. The Gaels earned the No. 2 seed.
The game was closer than its final score of 9-2. The majority of the game was within one run. The Gaels got on board first when Kayla Aldridge and Bergeson led off with singles. An error brought the two runners into scoring position. Lauren Mello hit a sac fly scoring Aldridge.
The Wolverines answered in the next half inning by scoring two. They led off the fourth inning with a single and a home run. The game remained close until the sixth inning when the Wolverines did most of their scoring. They scored three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. The Gaels added a run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Wolverines went on to win the game by a score of 9-2. Bergeson singled in her first two at-bats. She flew out in her third at-bat. Before the fly out she had reached base six straight times.
The Gaels return to action tomorrow for the final day of competition in the Saint Mary's Invitational. The No. 2 seeded Gaels will face off against No. 3 Stony Brook. The winner of that game will meet the winner of the No. 1 Utah Valley State vs. No. 4 Idaho State game in a championship game. Competition begins at 9:00 am from Cottrell Field.
