Softball finishes as Runner-Up in SMC Invite

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball finished competition at the Saint Mary's Invitational today. The Gaels began the day winning in a thrilling fashion against Stony Brook. The Gaels came back to win the game 8-7 on a walk off single by Lauren Clark. The Gaels were then defeated by Utah Valley State in the championship game. Molly Bergeson, Megan Galloway and Chelsea Loftis were named to the All-Tournament team.

Bergeson batted .467 during the tournament. She led the team with seven hits and three runs. She reached base in six straight plate appearances at point in the weekend. Galloway batted .333 and added five hits and a team leading three runs and five RBI. Galloway hit two homeruns on weekend. Loftis batted .333 with six hits. She led the team with three doubles and added three RBI and two runs.

Game 1

Stony Brook jumped all over the Gaels to start game one. Stony Brook scored a run in the first innign on a lead off homerun and batted around in the second inning plating five runs. The Gaels got on board in the second inning when Galloway led off with a homerun. Loftis singled and came around to score on a sac fly by Lauren Clark.

Stony Brook added another run in the fourth inning when Ashley Westphal, who led off the game with a homerun, hit her second homerun of the game. Stony Brook then played small ball to plate another run in the fourth. This extended their lead by six runs.

With the Gaels down 8-2 they came to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sadie Dolcini walked and Katherine Delpit doubled to put runners in scoring position. Sandra Ruezga singles to plate a run. Clark came to the bat with runners on the corners. Clarked smacked her first home run of the season and brought the Gaels within two runs.

The Gaels held the Stony Brook offense off of the scoreboard the rest of the game. In the sixth inning the Gaels came to the plate down by two runs. Ruezga and Clark led off with singles and were sacrificed into scoring position by Bergeson. Bronwyn Russell walked to load the bases. With two outs the Gaels scored a run on an error. Loftis then hit an infield single that tied the game at 8-8.

In the bottom of the seventh Ruezga led off with a double. Clark came to bat with a chance to win the game for the Gaels. Clark hit the walk-off single to complete the Gael comeback. This marked the third time this year the Gaels have won via the walk-off.

Game 2

After the Gaels comeback victory they met Utah Valley State in the championship game. Pitching led the Gaels in this game but they could not defeat the Wolverines. The Wolverines won all four of their games while at the SMC Invite.

Loftis looked good in the circle for the Gaels. She held the Wolverines to three runs while scattering eight hits. The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the third inning on a controversial call that plated one run and put another runner in scoring position. This runner came around to score and give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

The Gaels put on the board in the fifth inning when Galloway singled in Bergeson. The Wolverines added one run in the seventh inning to give them a 3-1 lead. The Gaels came to bat in the bottom of the seventh with ideas of back-to-back walk off wins. Two walks and an error loaded the bases with one out. Loftis hit a sac fly to bring the score to 3-2. The Wolverines held off the Gael threat and won the Saint Mary's Invitation.
