San Diego Continues Extends Winnings Streak

March 11, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior Kathleen Bonja poked a shot into shallow centerfield in game two with the bases loaded, two outs, and the winning run in scoring position. The Skyhawks centerfielder sprinted in to make a play on the ball but misfielded it allowing Kaslin Tucker to score the winning run from third base and capturing the Toreros third straight victory.

"Kaslin had a big time diving catch in left field, laying out to save the run in the top of the sixth inning, and then followed on offense with a two out walk to put her in position to score the winning run."

The University of San Diego softball team (10-10) swept the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks (11-10) Sunday afternoon 5-3 in game one and 4-3 in game two at the USD Softball Complex.

With the second game of the afternoon tied 3-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, the Toreros took control on defense holding the Skyhawks to no runs. In the bottom half of the inning, USD's offense stepped it up when Tucker walked with two outs. Valenzuela hit a single through the left side moving Tucker to second base. Carey Casciola hit a single through the left side as well moving Valenzuela and Tucker ahead loading the bases for Kathleen Bonja who blooped an RBI single into centerfield for the win.

"Those were all clutch at-bats in the seventh inning," said head coach Melissa McElvain. "Jen threw great in relief to shut down a great hitting team."

In game one against the Skyhawks, San Diego tallied a run in the third inning, but let the bats loose in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring four runs on three hits. USD loaded the bases with Celine Pujol at third base, Kaslin Tucker at second base, Nichole Valenzuela at first base, and Carey Casciola at the plate. Casciola reached first base on a two RBI fielder's choice and then advanced to second base moving all runners ahead two bases scoring Tucker and Pujol taking a 3-2 lead over the Skyhawks. Kathleen Bonja reached first base on a fielder's choice scoring Valenzuela and moving Casciola to third base. Fritsch singled to the shortstop advancing Bonja to second base and scoring Casciola. Tennessee-Martin made a pitching change as Danielle Treiber came up to bat. Treiber popped out to second base for the second out of the inning. Jennifer Ellenbeck then walked reloading the bases for Massei who struck out to end the inning.

Tennessee-Martin made an attempt at a comeback in the top of the sixth inning scoring two runs but the Toreros held on in the end for the 5-3 victory in game one of Sunday's double header.

Offensively for the Toreros, Casciola finished with a combined 4-for-8 on the day with three runs scored, one double and one RBI. Bonja finished 3-for-7 with one run scored and two RBI.

Defensively for USD, Christina Haake pitched a complete game striking out four batters. Haake moves to 4-3 overall. Katie Jo Nelson pitched 2.1 innings and struck out two batters. Jennifer Ellenbeck pitched 4.2 innings in relief and struck out three batters.

The Toreros return to the USD Softball Complex for a doubleheader against the Fairfield College Stags on Wednesday, March 14 scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
