Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team played in its first of five games this week. Unfortunately for the Gaels, they dropped today's match to Eastern Illinois by a score of 3-1. The Gaels fell to 10-13 on the season.
Saint Mary's got on the board in the bottom of the first when Molly Bergeson led off with a single. Bronwyn Russell then smacked a triple into left field, plating the first run of the game. With one out and Russell on third the Panthers found a little luck by snaring a line drive to third base off the bat of Megan Galloway. The third baseman made the quick move back to third to double up the Gaels in the first inning.
Eastern Illinois responded in the top of the second when they led off with a single. With one out the Panthers hit a homerun off of Gael starter Marlena Green to give Eastern Illinois the 2-1 edge.
Kate Albaugh came in to pitch in the third inning and kept the Panthers off the board until the top of the seventh inning when a walk and two wild pitches put a runner on third base. A sac fly scored the third run of the game for the Panthers and gave them a 3-1 lead.
Saint Mary's came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Gaels have already won via the walk off three times this year and looked as if they could do it again. The Gaels fought had in the seventh to load the bases and give themselves a chance for the `W'. They could not cash in the runs they needed and Eastern Illinois took the game 3-1.
The Gaels hit the ball hard all game but could not find the right holes to put runners across. They will attempt to get back on track tomorrow when they host Georgia Southern at 2:00 pm from Cottrell Field.
