SAN DIEGO, Calif - The University of San Diego softball team (11-11) remains at .500 after recording an 11-3 win and a 5-4 loss against the Quinnipiac University Bobcats Thursday afternoon.


San Diego got right to work in game one posting three runs in the first inning and taking a 3-0 lead over the Bobcats.  The Toreros big inning came in the third inning when they recorded seven runs scored.


Sophomore Kathleen Bonja started off the third inning with a single through the left side followed by a walk for senior Sara Mason which advanced Bonja to second.  Senior Gina McFarland smashed a stand-up double to center field scoring Bonja and Mason and taking a 5-0 lead.  Junior Virginia Fritsch was walked followed by a single up the middle from senior Marissa Merchain.  Fritsch advanced to second base and then to third on the throw.  McFarland made an attempt at home plate but Quinnipiac catcher Brianna Sloane already had the ball in her glove making the tag.


Freshman Emily Passovoy hit an RBI single to center field moving Merchain to second base and allowing Fritsch to score a run.  Freshman Kelly Nesseth came into pinch run for Merchain on second base.  Nesseth and Passovoy both advanced one base when junior Rebekah Bradford hit a single to left field.  With the bases loaded, sophomore Nichole Valenzuela cleared the bases on a three RBI double to left center field scoring Bradford, Passovoy, and Nesseth. 


Down 9-0, the Bobcats made a pitching change.  The Toreros ran through the batting cycle once which brought up Bonja again.  Bonja Singled to center field moving Valenzuela to third base.  On Mason's second at-bat in the inning, she hit an RBI single scoring Valenzuela.  However, on Bonja's advance to third base, she was tagged out ending the inning at 10-0.


The Toreros gave up three runs in the fourth inning.  San Diego then scored one run in the fifth when the game was mercy ruled for an 11-3 final.


In the nightcap, San Diego gave up three runs to the Bobcats in the first inning and was not able to recapture the lead through the remaining innings. The Toreros recorded two runs in the first inning and two runs in the sixth inning.  The Quinnipiac posted their three run first inning, one run in the second inning and one run in the sixth inning losing 5-4.


Offensively for the Toreros, Bonja combined hit 4-for-7 with three runs scored and one RBI.  McFarland hit 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.  Merchain hit 2-for-4 overall with two RBI.  Bradford hit 2-for-6 with one run scored, one triple and two RBI. 


Defensively for San Diego , Haake recorded a win moving to 3-3 overall, striking out three batters in 5.2 innings of work.  Harmonson moves to 6-6 overall while striking out nine batters in 5.1 innings of work.
