Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team entered today's doubleheader with a 1-2 record on the week. The Gaels exploded for 17 runs on 32 hits to win both games and finish the week with a 3-2 record. The Gaels improved to 13-14 on the season and 7-5 on the current home stand.
The Northern Colorado Bears got on board in the first inning when they strung together three singles and scored a run. The Gaels would clap back in their half of the first when Molly Bergeson led off with a single and scored on a sac fly.
With the game tied at 1-1, the bears would not manage to score another run off Gael starter Lauren Gardner. Gardner would go on to earn the complete game victory, giving up only one unearned run and six hits. After the first inning Gardner only gave up three hits. She struck out six and only walked two. Gardner earned her team leading fourth win of the season.
As Gardner kept the Northern Colorado offense off the board, the same could not be said for the Gaels. Saint Mary's would score eight runs in game one. Bergeson and Bronwyn Russel would both record three hits and combine for five runs and three stolen bases. Five different Gaels would come across to score in the ballgame.
Game two mirrored the first game. The Gaels would get a surplus of offense and outstanding pitching. Game two's starter Megan Galloway would earn her third win of the season after pitching six strong innings and allowing only two runs and five hits. The righty kept the Bears scoreless through five en route to her complete game victory.
The Gaels did not leave the offense back with game one. Saint Mary's scored multiple runs in three innings and led 6-0 after the third. Senior Lauren Mello led the Gael offense in game two. The centerfielder went 3-4 with three runs.
Galloway, the Gaels starter, did not only get it done in the circle but at the plate as well. Galloway went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI as she helped her own cause.
The Gaels improved to 3-2 on the week and 7-5 on their current home stand. Mello led the team in today's doubleheader sweep. She recorded four hits, four runs and two RBI.
The Gaels will take Sunday off before returning to action on Monday. The Gaels will host New Mexico State in a doubleheader. The action begins at 2:00 p.m. from Cottrell Field.
