STILLWATER, Okla. - Freshman Carey Casciola recorded her first collegiate career homerun against Rogers State University Hillcats (18-8). The newcomer from San Luis Obispo, Calif. was the second batter of the game following Nichole Valenzuela's double down the left field line. Casciola demolished the ball over left field for a two-RBI homerun taking a 2-0 lead over the Hillcats Sunday morning.
The Hillcats responded in the top of the second inning tying the game with two runs scored.
In the top of the sixth inning, Casciola led off with a doubled to left field. Kathleen Bonja hit a grounder to third base allowing Casciola to advance. Virginia Fritsch walked, and then stole second base putting runners at second and third base. Danielle Treiber hit a popped out to the catcher for the second out. During Jennifer Ellenbeck's at bat, Rogers State hurler threw a wild pitch past the catcher allowing Fritsch to move to third base and scoring Casciola. Ellenbeck eventually took base on balls and was replaced by Keely Helbock as a pinch runner. Kaslin Tucker took base on balls moving Helbock to second base. Stacy Compton took advantage of the bases loaded situation and hit a single up the middle into centerfield scoring Fritsch and Helbock, and advancing Tucker to third base for the 5-2 final.
In the afternoon game, San Diego leapt out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Fritsch singled through the right side followed by another single by Treiber through the left side moving Fritsch to second base. Ellenbeck grounded out to second base moving all runners ahead one base. Tucker walked loading the bases. Compton reached on a Hillcat error allowing Fritsch & Treiber to score and moving Tucker to third base. Compton stole second base and Tucker scored on the throw to second base. Helbock struck out for the second out. Compton advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Valenzuela hit an RBI single up the middle scoring Compton. Casciola reached on an error by the shortstop but was thrown out at second base to end the inning at 4-0.
USD scored one more run in the fifth inning. Rogers State was able to score a run in the sixth inning but unable to tally any more than that.
Offensively for USD, Casciola hit a combined 3-for-7 with one double, one homerun, two RBI, and two runs scored. Valenzuela hit 4-for-7 one double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Fritsch hit 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
Defensively for the Toreros, Katie Jo Nelson moves to 3-6 striking out 12 batters in seven innings of work recording her third complete game. Jennifer Ellenbeck moves to 6-3 striking out 10 batters in seven innings of work recording her fifth complete game.
The Toreros return home for a doubleheader against the Brown University Bears on March 24, 2007. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
