SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team (16-13) posted a pair of victories against the Brown University Bears in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros walked away with a 2-1 win in game one, and a 1-0 victory in game two.
Senior Christina Haake had a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings in game two before the Bears recorded a single through the left side. The only other hit by Brown came in the seventh inning.
The winning run for USD came in the fifth inning as Kaslin Tucker led off with a walk. Stacie Compton grounded out to first base allowing Tucker to advance to second base. Emily Passovoy, pinch hitting for Keely Helbock, flied out to left field. Returning to the top of the batting order, Nichole Valenzuela switched places with Tucker hitting an RBI double to left field scoring Tucker from second base. Carey Casciola flied out to third base to end the inning.
In game two, Brown struck first posting the first run of the game in the fifth inning. San Diego's defense held strong allowing the offense to go to work answering back in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game 1-1.
The game-winning run came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jennifer Ellenbeck led off with a walk. Celine Pujol laid down a bunt back to the pitcher moving Ellenbeck to second base. Ellenbeck advanced to third base on a throwing error by third base. Tucker hit an RBI single through the right side allowing Ellenbeck to score for the 2-1 victory.
Offensively for San Diego, Nichole Valenzuela hit a combined 2-for-5 in the doubleheader with one double, one RBI, and one run scored. Kathleen Bonja hit 2-for-6 with two doubles and one RBI. Kaslin Tucker hit 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Defensively for USD, Christina Haake moves to 6-4 on the season striking out 12 batters and allowing only two hits and no runs scored in seven innings of work. Ellenbeck moves to 7-3 overall allowing only one run on seven hits and striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.
San Diego opens up conference play on the road as they take on Loyola Marymount with doubleheaders on Saturday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Sunday April 1 at noon and 2:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
