San Luis Obispo, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team hit the road to face the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Mustangs defeated the Gaels in both games of a doubleheader. Game one gave a final score of 9-3 in favor of Cal Poly. Game two was an extra innings thriller that was won by the Mustangs in the bottom of the tenth inning by a score of 2-1.
The Gaels got on board first in game one. Chelsea Loftis and Sandra Ruezga came around to score to give the Gaels the 0-2 lead. The Mustangs responded the in the bottom of the third when they tied the game at 2-2.
The Gaels retook the lead in the top of the fourth. Megan Galloway got via the single and came around to score on a double by Katherine Delpit. The Gaels could not hold on to the 2-3 lead. The Mustangs came to bat in the next half inning and scored seven runs. They sent 12 batters to the plate and even had six straight batters come across to score.
By the end of the fourth inning the score was 9-3. This would become the final score of game one as neither team would add any more runs.
The Gaels dropped a thriller in game two. The Game went into the tenth inning before the Mustangs pulled out the victory.
Cal Poly got on board in the first inning after scoring an unearned run. The game would see very little offense again until the top of the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth Bergeson led off with a double and came around to score on a double by Lauren Mello.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the tenth. The Mustangs put a run across and ended the game in extra innings. The final score was 2-1 in favor of Cal Poly.
The real story behind game two was the fantastic pitching by both starters. The starters for both teams went the entire ballgame and each gave up only one earned run. For the Gaels, Galloway went 9.2 innings and only gave up nine hits. Cal Poly's starter, Jenna Maiden, earned the victory. She pitched 10 innings and only gave up six hits.
Although the Gaels dropped both of Saturday's games, they competed hard against a tough opponent. Cal Poly is currently receiving votes in several top 25 polls. Saint Mary's will look to get back on track next weekend when they travel to Reno, NV. The Gaels will compete in their final invite of the year in the Nevada Invitational. The competition will include Nevada and Utah.
