Toreros Drop Two to UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE , Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team dropped to 12-14 on the season after two non-conference losses in a doubleheader against the UC Riverside Highlanders Sunday. The Toreros posted a 6-0 loss in the opener and a 7-2 decision in the nightcap.


San Diego was able to reach first base every inning as Riverside gave up eight hits.  Two Toreros recorded multiple hits in game one.  Nichole Valenzuela hit 2-for-4 on the day.  Sara Mason also hit 2-for-4 with one double. 


Jennifer Thompson was the offensive power for the Highlanders, going three-for-three with three RBI. Her RBI double off of the wall in center scored the first run in the Highlanders' three-run fourth, and she added a two-run single in the fifth to make the score 5-0.


In game two, the Toreros struggled defensively allowing four runs in the third inning.  On the offensive side, San Diego 's two runs came in the fifth inning when Ashlee Nunes singled to first base followed by a Nichole Valenzuela single to center field moving Nunes to second base.  Kathleen Bonja grounded out to the shortstop moving Nunes and Valenzuela over one base each.  With runners in scoring position, Sara Mason singled to center field and then advanced on the throw by the outfielder allowing Nunes and Valenzuela to score. 


UCR added three runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Sanchez and Martinez and an RBI double by Greenawalt.


Offensively in game two, Mason hit 2-for-3 with one double and two RBI.  Nunes went 1-for-4 with one run scored.  Valenzuela hit 1-for-2 with one run scored. 


In game one, Erin Harmonson took the defensive loss, falling to 7-7.  Haake drops to 3-5 with the game two loss.


San Diego takes a weekend off as they gear up for the start of conference on Saturday, April 8 when they host the Santa Clara University Broncos.  Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
