Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team suffered two losses in opening day of the UNR Tournament. The Gaels dropped game one 10-5 to the North Texas Mean Green, handing Megan Galloway the loss and dropping the Gaels to 4-21 on the season. In game two, SMC tallied eight hits but was held to just two runs by North Dakota State to hand the Gaels a 5-2 defeat. With the pair of losses, Saint Mary's drops to 4-22 on the season while North Texas moves to 12-15 and NDSU improves to 10-19.
In game one, Saint Mary's scored early when Lauren Mello hit a one-run single in the first to bring in Bronwyn Russell who reached base on a double. The lead was short-lived as North Texas came back with three runs in the second and two in the third to bring the score to 5-1. The Gaels lessened the gap when they tacked on three runs in the fifth with a four-hit rally. Russell smashed her second double of the game and was brought in when Marcia-Marie Euker hit her second homer of the season. Lauren Mello followed with a double and was brought home on a single by freshman, Sadie Dolcini.
Offensively, SMC tallied a season-high 13 hits but were held to just five runs by the opposition. Three Gaels had multi-hit games with Bronwyn Russell leading the way. The sophomore, second baseman went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Lauren Mello was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored while Sandra Ruezga went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Marcia-Marie Euker (1-for-2), Sadie Dolcini (1-for-1), Eleni Papailias (1-for-3) and Justine Larsen (1-for-3) tacked on the other hits for Saint Mary's.
Megan Galloway was tagged with the loss in game one, throwing 2 1/3 innings from the circle and giving up five runs on five hits and striking out one. Gardner followed with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout. Chelsea Loftis also added an inning of relief, giving up one run and one hit and striking out one. Kate Albaugh was also tagged with three runs on two hits in the sixth.
In game two, the Gaels scored five runs on eight hits but were edged 5-2 by North Dakota State in Saint Mary's second game of the UNR Tournament. SMC's two earned runs came on home runs with Chelsea Loftis hitting her first of the season in the second inning. Senior, Marcia-Marie Euker went yard for the second time to post another run in the third. North Dakota State rallied to score two runs in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to earn the victory.
Offensively, the Gaels were led by Euker and Loftis who each went 2-for-3 with a home run and a run scored. Russell (1-for-4), Michelle Mathis (1-for-3), Lauren Clark (1-for-3), and Shelly Taketa (1-for-3) tacked on the other hits for the Gaels.
Chelsea Loftis took the loss for the Gaels after pitching two innings of relief and giving up two earned runs. Larsen started for the Gaels, throwing 2 1/3 from the circle and allowing two runs and striking out two. Marlena Green came in for 2/3 of an inning, giving up a run and striking out one. Galloway returned for two innings of relief to give up one run in the sixth.
Saint Mary's returns to action Saturday April 1 when they open day two of the tournament against Utah Valley State. The first pitch is slated for 9:30 am. The Gaels will close day two with a 2:30 pm match-up against host Nevada.
