Reno, NV-The Saint Mary's softball team dropped both games in day two of the UNR Tournament to give them a 0-4 record over their tournament stay. With the pair of losses Saint Mary's will advance to the Consolation Final where they will face Utah Valley State for the second time this weekend. The Gaels suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Utah Valley State Wolverines when they were edged 11-10 in eight innings. In game two of the day, SMC fell 6-3 to host Nevada, handing them the number six seed in the tournament. With the pair of losses, Saint Mary's falls to 4-24 on the season.
Saint Mary's tallied 10 runs on 11 hits but Utah Valley State still managed to rally for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn them a 11-10 victory over the Gaels in game one. Saint Mary's stranded eight runners over eight innings and tallied two errors in their third game of the tournament.
Nine different Gaels recorded hits with Bronwyn Russell (2-for-3) and Shelly Taketa (2-for-4) both posting multi-games. Senior, Sandra Ruezga smashed her first home run of the season in the fourth to tie the game at four. Michelle Mathis (1-for-3) tallied a double and a stolen base.
Freshman, Marlena Green started in the circle, throwing the first 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two. Senior, Justine Larsen came in for 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up three runs on two hits and striking out one. Gardner accounted for a run in the fifth when she added 2/3 innings of relief. Galloway finished the game for the Gaels, throwing the last 2 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout to hand her the loss.
In game two, Nevada took an early lead and never relinquished it as the Gaels suffered a 6-3 defeat to the Wolf Pack. Saint Mary's posted runs in the first, fourth and the sixth but tallied two errors in the game. Nevada had a 10-6 advantage in hits but four errors. Jennifer McPherson (10-12) earned the victory for the Wolf Pack, throwing the complete game and allowing just one earned run and striking out four to hand Nevada the No. 2 seed and send them to the championship game.
Offensively, Saint Mary's was led by senior, Eleni Papailias who went 2-for-3 and hit her first home run of the season. Shelly Taketa was also 2-for-3 while Marcia-Marie Euker added a double and Michelle Mathis added a stolen base to her 1-for-4 effort from the plate.
Lauren Gardner threw the first 1 1/3 innings for the Gaels, giving up three earned runs and striking out one as she was tagged with the loss in game two. Sophomore, Megan Galloway gave up two runs on six hits and struck out four in her five 2/3 innings of relief.
Saint Mary's will return to action tomorrow when they take on Utah Valley State in the Consolation Final. The first pitch is slated for 11:30 am from Reno High School.
