LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Jennifer Ellenbeck's homerun capped a four run first inning in game one of USD's conference opening doubleheader at Smith Field against the Loyola Marymount Lions Saturday afternoon.
San Diego is now 17-14 on the season, while the Lions improve to 28-15. Both teams start PCSC play with a 1-1 record.
San Diego scored all of its runs of the day in the first inning. Nichole Valenzuela led off the game with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice by Carey Casciola. She advanced to third on a fly ball, and scored on a single by Virginia Fritsch. Danielle Treiber's infield single put runners at first and second for USD, and Jennifer Ellenbeck gave the Toreros a 4-0 lead on a home run to left field.
Haake (7-4) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, San Diego fell behind four runs in the fourth inning as the Toreros were unable to recover from the deficit losing 4-0.
Katie Jo Nelson (3-7) took the loss for USD, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The Lions and Toreros wrap up the first weekend of PCSC play on Sunday with a doubleheader at Smith Field beginning at noon.
