Reno, NV- The Saint Mary's softball team suffered a 9-5 defeat against Utah Valley State in the Consolation Final of the UNR tournament. The Gaels posted five runs on 11 hits with three home runs. Megan Galloway was tagged with the loss for SMC, throwing the first five 2/3 innings from the circle, giving up nine runs on eleven hits and striking out one. After the day, Saint Mary's moves to 4-25 on the season.
Senior Marcia-Marie Euker was named to the All-Tournament team after finishing the weekend with a .436 average with a double, two home runs and three RBI. The outfielder also added two stolen bases on two attempts to her 7-for-16 effort from the plate. Her best performance on the weekend came on opening day when she went 3-for-5 with two home runs, two stolen bases and three RBI.
In the consolation final the Wolverines took an early lead when Heidi Boyer hit a two run home run in the bottom of the first. Saint Mary's tied it up in the third when Shelly Taketa and Euker both reached on base hits and were brought home on a two-run single by Lauren Mello. The tie was short lived as UVSU posted five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Saint Mary's tacked on another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, all on home runs, but it was not enough as Utah Valley State would take it 9-5.
Offensively, seven different Gaels posted hits to combine for two doubles and eleven home runs. Senior Eleni Papailias hit her second home run of the tournament while sophomore Megan Galloway hit her first of the season. Shelly Taketa (2-for-3) also hit a home run in the sixth to bring her tally to three on the year. Chelsea Loftis was 3-for-4 while Marcia-Marie Euker finished the day going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Galloway took the loss for he Gaels after throwing 5 2/3 innings from the circle and giving up eight earned runs. She was relieved by freshman Marlena Green who allowed one hit in 2/3 innings pitched.
Saint Mary's will return to the diamond Saturday April 8 when they travel to Portland State to take on the Vikings in their first conference series. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for Noon from Erv Lind Stadium.
